Black Magic

Varun Bahl sent out a demi-couture line. Sexy Prom Dresses Black Crescendo, the collection was chic and classic. Again, we saw a fine play of androgyny. Varun’s girls — with orange lips and stark eyes, hair pulled up — wore a range of styles from super-flared pants to tight pencil dresses, flouncy skirts and sheer layers. There was a contradiction in each of his looks. The super-sexy lace, while playing a good game of peekaboo, was paired with something as matronly strict as starched flat-collar white shirts. As always, the embroidery and embellishment were classy — all there but never too much. The detailing that stood out was those little clusters of circles, almost looking like bunches of grapes. Peppered with Strapless Prom Dresses the right amount of shimmer, Varun’s fall-winter 2011 look is sexy and slick.

Sari specialist: Many have tried to modernise the sari but few have been able to sexify it quite like TT. Feather-weight five metres, worn with a super-skimpy choli, draped Grecian-style and made modern with elements like the jacket and belt. Totally trendy meets totally timeless.

Spot-on trendy: From fringes to the Orient, the collection — for which Wedding Dresses researched in the Museum of Taipei — was dotted dramatically with some of the season’s hottest trends. Classic TT styles were infused with some new trendy elements, neither of them distracting one from the other. Chinese embroidery found pride of place in his yokes and his palazzo pants became chainette fringed. Even the earrings were so now. Ah, we covet!

clinch it like a woman: Sure the world is suddenly rediscovering the beauty of belts but guess who’s been working the waist for the past two decades? TT never fails to clinch it correct. From jewelled delicates like apsaras to Obi belts encrusted with natural agate and leather belts with mother-of-pearl, he had it all.
